Manuka Honey is a unique honey from New Zealand renowned for its special properties that include the presence of the naturally occurring compound Methylglyoxal (MGO™) known as the “holy grail” of the Manuka Honey industry.

This industry began with the scientific discovery of the unique antibacterial activity of Manuka Honey made by Professor Peter Molan some 25 years ago. Prof. Molan was the first to discover Manuka Honey’s unique attributes but for many years the reason why Manuka Honey was actually unique remained unknown.

The answer came from Germany in 2006 from Professor Thomas Henle’s group. Prof. Henle discovered that the compound Methylglyoxal, naturally occurring in Manuka Honey, contributes to its unique properties and provides the exceptional antibacterial activity that it is most commonly associated with Manuka Honey.

In 2008 Manuka Health New Zealand set up an accurate, robust, science-based standard for measuring and rating Manuka honey, based on the level of antibacterial Methylglyoxal which consequently lead to the MGO™ Manuka Honey quality system being successfully launched in 35 countries. This has now been accepted as a trusted method of identifying Manuka Honey by a number of organisations.

Each MGO™ Manuka Honey product is tested and certified to contain a minimum level of Methylglyoxal, ranging from 30mg/kg up to 550mg/kg in our highest grade MGO™ 550+ Manuka Honey.

MGO™ Manuka Honey is certified Manuka Honey from beehives in remote and pristine areas of New Zealand, with full traceability from beehive to shelf.
